78.  How do they act when they are particularly happy?

You’d have to know Arcanus to understand the subtle differences in him when he’s happy, but once you do, you’ll find he’s actually learned to enjoy himself since the war.

His shoulders relax more, he actually lets his vocals go – though softer than most and almost inaudible for humans – and he doesn’t make it a habit to avoid physical contact.  Even if it’s something as small as a pat on his back or hand on his shoulder to hugs, he accepts them from close friends – family to him.  As they grow older, the twins will often hang on him for attention, and he surprisingly enjoys the attention once the twins are past the ‘stinky diapers and drooling’ stage.  He opens up the most with Ellie, and usually in private, but, at that time, he is even known to initiate contact with her, often trying to hold her hand awkwardly or give her a purr and nuzzle.

84.  What are some physical features they find attractive on people?

This has actually him a while to build preferences for because he started off being solely focused on functionality and practicality.  Once he’s been forced into the light of enjoyment, however, he’s started to actually think about what it is he enjoys outside of work.

One thing is hair.  On strangers, it’s more a curiosity, but with those closest to him, he’s interested in the different textures, colors, and styles humans put them in.  He loves the silky feeling of Ellie’s hair and how it matches the color of his plates.  

He also loves color.  Mainly because he’s grown up knowing nothing but white with his family (who all shares the same plate colors, albeit with a few differences in shades) and himself, but now he sees all the different colors of the species and even individuals within.  Surprisingly considering his single hue color palette of clothes, he enjoys watching the different colors Ellie or Jane wears.  Even if Ellie has white hair, it’s the knowledge that she can change it’s color that interests him.

Never tell anyone this, though, as he’d vehemently deny it.

Jane

1.   What sociocultural factors of your own life do you think influenced your choice of character and how you play them?

Jane has been very ‘what would I do in this or this situation’ in the beginning and when I actually play a character in the games.  Lame and perhaps a bit of a cop-out, I know, but aren’t all our characters us in some way? 

Alright, so some of these may upset some people, but if you know Jane, this might make sense.  

First is her level of education.  Much of that came from the thinking of ‘what if’ concerning my own generation.  I finished school (though completed it only because the hospital I was in had a schooling program), but there were many girls who did not because of teen pregnancies.  For some, it was even pre-teen, which often led to so many dropping out of school.  What would happen to a character that did the same (though under different circumstances) and went into a darker life just to get by?  And, being a woman and living with an obvious divide between sexes stemming from this thinking of ‘girls should so what the boy wants if she wants to keep him’ and other macho-man bullshit where I live, I didn’t see a young teen in the Reds as anything but used for her body.

Another factor that shaped her is her belief system.  She’s mentioned it a few times in Parable of how she doesn’t believe in or follow a religion, but grants everyone their ideals.  Hell, she sometimes envies that attitude of being ignorant and trusting in a higher power.  To her, she has seen no reason to believe in a higher power, not because of her life or because of the hate that these beliefs (many with very few differences).  She is a way to get that very same thinking of mine out.  You can believe in what helps you cope with life and the many questions we can’t answer, but violence or pushing it upon others only belittles the values of your beliefs.

For something less controversial, but actually more personal, Jane has her give no shits attitude as a contrast to my own self-consciousness.  My father has a way of making people feel shame for what they find interesting or like if it goes against what he thinks.  He wasn’t physically abusive, but even hard words towards yourself or your mother can make someone feel like shit.  As result, you see and hear the same disproval in others – often picking out those from the crowd while completely overlooking those who say otherwise.  Jane still has some of that in her attitudes towards more feminine clothes in Juxtaposed, but she has Garrus to help her feel beautiful.  When Jane jokes about walking around naked just to show off her scars, she goes against everything I’d ever do thanks to my raising, but it makes me love her all the more that I can open up through her.  She’s also much more outgoing than I am because she just doesn’t care what others think.  

Arcanus

11.  What mythic deity do you think best embodies the core values of your character?  How so?

While I’m sure I could find someone else if I really looked, I think the best answer is always the one that comes to mind without thinking.  That being, Athena, the greek goddess.  (Sorry Arcanus, but your god inspiration is a goddess)

Not only do I see practically every attribute of the goddess in him without trying, but I always got the vibe from Athena in the stories that she was a stern woman, not pulling punches when defied or insulted.  She cared less about beauty and more in the substantiality of the mind, and I see so much of that in Arcanus.  For him, skill comes first and looks will fall in line shortly after.

31.  What story gave them nightmares as a child?

Cassia

Cassia was afraid of the thought of the First Contact War / Relay 314 Incident.  That bit of history scared the living daylights out of her because she couldn’t imagine her mother ever hating her, looking more turian than human.  She’d often dream of her mother turning away from or looking down at her with the same disgust and hatred as many of the children at school and, although she could turn the other cheek to them, she couldn’t deal with seeing that feeling in her loving mother who meant the world to her at her age.  She’d often wake up sobbing and running to her mother, begging to be loved and forgiven for being alien.  She eventually grew out of it, but there was a long phase of worry on Jane and Garrus’ part over how to reassure that such a thing would never happen.

Damocles

Damocles’ nightmare phase came later in his life.  Sure, there would be nightmares a night or two after scary movies (just like Cassia), but what really kept him up for many nights was the telling of what the Reapers did through Indoctrination. 

It’s not too crazy to believe that Reapers would soon become a topic to be taught in school and, considering their position in the war, learning about them was paramount for the Vakarians and their Wraith members’ children.  The worst that could happen, they believed, would be to cover everyone’s eyes and ears and pretend the war never happened just because it could scare kids or bring back horrible memories.  It is then, during EDI’s retelling of the effects of Indoctrination, that Damocles began to suffer from nightmares because of the fear of being controlled without even knowing.  His nightmares stemmed more from losing control and helplessness to a force he couldn’t physically fight than the idea of Reapers themselves.    

45.  Who is their greatest confidant?  Who confides in them?

Cassia

Despite being someone to always lend an open ear, Cassia never really had anyone to talk to that wasn’t mom or dad for a long while.  That is, until her out mate came about when she was 13.  I can’t really tell the circumstances of their meeting, but I can tell you that he came from a sort of vacuum, not privy to all the things that were going on on Virmire or with her friends and family.  Because he was finally someone from the outside that she could talk to, he became her sounding board and she could talk his ears off if not for the fact that turians don’t really have them.

Damocles

Because he has effectively closed himself off from others, many do not come to him looking for a sympathetic ear to her them out beyond Cassia on occasion.  As for him finding someone to confide in, other than his sister – of course – he found only one person who he entrusted with his soul, even the things he couldn’t tell Cassia, his mate.  They didn’t meet until he was much older, so he often had no one but his own thoughts to spill his heart out to, but once he found him, his mate became the only solace in his tough life.
