31.  What story gave them nightmares as a child?

Cassia

Cassia was afraid of the thought of the First Contact War / Relay 314 Incident.  That bit of history scared the living daylights out of her because she couldn’t imagine her mother ever hating her, looking more turian than human.  She’d often dream of her mother turning away from or looking down at her with the same disgust and hatred as many of the children at school and, although she could turn the other cheek to them, she couldn’t deal with seeing that feeling in her loving mother who meant the world to her at her age.  She’d often wake up sobbing and running to her mother, begging to be loved and forgiven for being alien.  She eventually grew out of it, but there was a long phase of worry on Jane and Garrus’ part over how to reassure that such a thing would never happen.

Damocles

Damocles’ nightmare phase came later in his life.  Sure, there would be nightmares a night or two after scary movies (just like Cassia), but what really kept him up for many nights was the telling of what the Reapers did through Indoctrination. 

It’s not too crazy to believe that Reapers would soon become a topic to be taught in school and, considering their position in the war, learning about them was paramount for the Vakarians and their Wraith members’ children.  The worst that could happen, they believed, would be to cover everyone’s eyes and ears and pretend the war never happened just because it could scare kids or bring back horrible memories.  It is then, during EDI’s retelling of the effects of Indoctrination, that Damocles began to suffer from nightmares because of the fear of being controlled without even knowing.  His nightmares stemmed more from losing control and helplessness to a force he couldn’t physically fight than the idea of Reapers themselves.    

45.  Who is their greatest confidant?  Who confides in them?

Cassia

Despite being someone to always lend an open ear, Cassia never really had anyone to talk to that wasn’t mom or dad for a long while.  That is, until her out mate came about when she was 13.  I can’t really tell the circumstances of their meeting, but I can tell you that he came from a sort of vacuum, not privy to all the things that were going on on Virmire or with her friends and family.  Because he was finally someone from the outside that she could talk to, he became her sounding board and she could talk his ears off if not for the fact that turians don’t really have them.

Damocles

Because he has effectively closed himself off from others, many do not come to him looking for a sympathetic ear to her them out beyond Cassia on occasion.  As for him finding someone to confide in, other than his sister – of course – he found only one person who he entrusted with his soul, even the things he couldn’t tell Cassia, his mate.  They didn’t meet until he was much older, so he often had no one but his own thoughts to spill his heart out to, but once he found him, his mate became the only solace in his tough life.

Damocles

7.  What feature (physical or otherwise) do they hate the most about themselves?

Oh man, this one hurts to answer, but it’s something I’ve been thinking about since you sent me this one.

Damocles, as it’s probably obvious, hates his hybrid nature.  He hates his extra toes and fingers and wider shaped body, all outward signs of his being different.  I guess a life of being constantly stared at, talked about, and avoided can do that to a person.

His self-hatred is to the point that, as a teenage equivalent for turians, he would often bind his fingers – middle and index together and ring and pinky together – and strap his extra toe tightly to each of his feet.  It was painful to keep with during the days, and his parents and sister soon found out, but he still does it at times when feeling particularly self-conscious.  He would also skip out on meals as a kid so that his waist would stay slimmer, but that problem fixed itself when he realized that, in order to gain the strength to fight on jobs, he needed to eat and exercise.  Is he against wearing waist binding?  No, but there often aren’t any big enough for him, which creates a whole new self-depreciation he tends to take out on any poor fool he meets on the battlefield.

Cassia

11.  Do they have any vices?

I wouldn’t consider it so much a vice, but a bad habit of hers:  Cassia loves to push the limits of what equipment can do.  Especially when it comes to her beloved gunship.  She will often drive at breakneck speeds with stomach flipping maneuvers, sometimes looking like she’s bound to lose control, but she always knows what she’s doing.  A bit of a daredevil, she is urged on many times by her brother into doing things that would make their parents have an aneurysm if they ever found out.

Arcanus

44.  What’s the one thing they wish they could do more often, but can’t?

Arcanus wishes he could go to Palaven many times in his life.  However, because of his associations with mercenary bands and past – none too honorable – discharge from the turian military, he believes he isn’t very welcome on his childhood home planet.  As a Blue Suns commander, he often took time to travel there and visit family, his sister in particular, but that became unwise as soon as the galaxy began to see his association with the Vakarians and those two’s falling out with the Council – and galactic law.  While there isn’t really evidence against him, per se, he doesn’t often find it enjoyable to go through the effort of getting to Palaven and staying out of the public eye.

Damocles

19.  What boosts your OC’s confidence the most?

As a child, his confidence was often boosted with the acknowledgments and support of his family and close Normandy family.  As he grew, however, it came to the point where that just wasn’t enough.  He isn’t needy of attention or boosts, by any means, but you live a life of being the outcast that the acceptance of your family feels hollow.  To him, his parents and family support him because they love him, but it feels like they are obligated to, they’ve known him all his life and know the man he is.  It’s the strangers that affect him, often deflate his strength even if he pretends to be unaffected as his coping mechanism.  

In the end, it’s not his family that boosts his confidence in his actions, but his mate.  Given all his flaws, Damocles is accepted by his mate and, in a way, this character – who I have yet to name for spoiler reasons – knows the feeling of stigma.  He’s had his own dirty looks and whispers said about him and his family, so he knows what it feels like to be set out from the group.  While not exactly the same, it’s his strength in moving on that encourages Damocles and his acceptance and devotion that boosts Damocles’ spirits, gives him reason to be proud to come home and talk of his success on jobs.

Arcanus

22.  How does your OC usually show affection?  Are they openly romantic or more restricted with their affectionate emotions?

I think it goes without saying that Arcanus is a very private person.  He doesn’t openly touch and show physical affection in public with Ellie, but it’s mostly from a combination of ingrained turian culture and his sense of professionalism.  He loves her, sure, but sees no reason to show to the universe he does.  Just the fact that she and their closest family knows is enough for him.  To him, it’s no one’s business what he and Ellie do together or who they have decided to take as their mate, but that has a lot to do with turians as a whole and their thinking of keeping their private lives to themselves.  

On the other hand, though, he is not one to refuse Ellie her affection.  If she wants to hold his hand in public, he will find a way to make their fingers fit together.  If she wants a kiss, then he’ll lean down and press his forehead to hers or press his mouth to hers.  He lets Ellie do as she pleases and, if it pleases her to show affection in public, then he’ll try to learn to do so.  Who knows, in time he may even learn how to initiate touches and intimacy outside of their home.
