Sitting here knowing I need to write the next Osteogenesis part, but thinking ‘hey! Let’s do a fic with the First Contact War trope.’

How to Get to Know Your Characters
@lourek asked:
Okay so it’s me again. I have a problem, cuz I really don’t know my characters?? And I’d like to get to know them. I know this might sound stupid, but do you have a masterpost about best ways to get to know your own characters or would you be willing to make one? I’ve noticed that all those “answer these questions” things are pretty useful. Thank you, I still worship you, good bye
Not a stupid question at all! This is one of the most challenging and important parts of becoming a writer. Getting to know someone takes time and effort, and characters are no exception.
So without further ado, here are my go-to techniques for getting to know a character:
1. Ask yourself these basic questions:
- How old are they mentally/spiritually? Do they have an old soul, or are they a perpetual kid at heart? Does their personality not coincide with their physical age?
- What do they care about most in the world? What would they die for?
- What are their interests? What books, movies, and shows do they read/watch religiously? What do they geek out over?
- What’s the most embarrassing thing that ever happened to them? Have they told anyone? If so, who?
- On that note, what is one secret they’ve never told anyone?
- What was their childhood like? Was it happy? Tragic? Why or why not?
- How many relationships do they have? How have they affected them?
- What is their greatest fear?
- What was the best thing that ever happened to them?
- What was the worst thing that ever happened to them?
- If you had to describe the character in one word, what is the first that comes to mind?
2. Once that’s done, get nosy.
- Empty their pockets, backpack, or purse. Make a list of everything inside. What do they always take with them? Why?
- Describe their bedroom. Is it neat, or messy? Is it minimalist? Cluttered? Are they neat, or messy by nature? Is there any artwork on the wall, any posters? Are there lots of books? A TV? Stuffed animals? Be as detailed as you want to be, and think about why your character has these things and what they say about them.
- If they have one, describe their car. What kind of car do they drive? How does it correlate with their personality, their career? Do they keep any photos of loved ones? Are there lots of fast food containers?
- We’ve already touched on this briefly, but think about their books. Write down at least ten titles on their shelf. Think about what genres they like, what authors, and why they might enjoy them.
- What kind of movie genres do they like? What kind of TV shows? Why do they enjoy them? Do they have any guilty pleasures that they’d rather anyone not know about?
- Take a look inside their closet. What kind of clothes do they wear? What’s their style? Can they afford the clothes they’d actually like to wear? Are they preppy? Is their closet organized, or is it a hot mess?
3. Get to know the family.
- What are their parents like? Do they have a good relationship? Are they friends? Do they just plain suck? If so, why?
- If they don’t have a good relationship with their parents, are there any parental figures that their close with? What are they like?
- Do they have any siblings? Are they close? Are they protective of them, or vice versa?
- What is their nationality? Do they have strong ties to their heritage, or could they care less?
- What about their extended family? Do they have any weird relatives? (In my opinion, every character should have at least one weird relative. They are a lot of fun to write.)
4. Fill in the details.
Brainstorm random questions about your characters, their likes, dislikes, et cetera. Here are examples:
- What is their favorite food?
- Their favorite beverage?
- Their favorite movie?
- Their favorite book?
- Their favorite TV show?
- What is their dream job?
- Do they keep a journal?
- Do they have good handwriting, or is it illegible from excessive note-taking?
- What’s their favorite color?
- What’’s their favorite kind of weather? Do they like sunny days, or rainy ones?
- Can they draw? Are they artistic in general?
- What kind of romantic/sexual partner do they like (if they’re interested in that sort of thing at all)? Do they have a ‘type?’
- What would their ideal date be (even just with friends)? Do they like generic dinner and movie-type stuff, or do they favor museums and plays?
- What would their ideal afternoon look like?
- Do they prefer TV or books?
- Are they introverted or extroverted? Do they hate social gatherings, or thrive on them? Do they relish in alone time?
- Coffee or tea?
- Cats or dogs?
- Do they eat breakfast? If so, what?
- What’s their opinion on pineapple pizza?
5. Fill out some character sheets.
Simple character sheets are a great way to fill in the gaps and get to know your character. Though there are quite a few floating around on my favorite blogs, but here are a few examples:
- There’s a “lazy person’s” character sheet here.
- There’s a “how to create a memorable character” sheet here.
- And there’s a “no effort” character sheet here.
Of course, the only way to truly get to know your character is to write about them. You never know how they’ll develop until you get going, and once you do, they’ll never cease to surprise you. Characters truly do gain lives of their own, so don’t give up and keep writing.
And in the meantime, I hope this helps! ❤
@atceeloos for our Drive? 🙂
All of you who comment on fics, reblog then, like them, ask the author about them: you are amazing and inspirational and you keep writers going in so many ways. You are the real MVPs. I love you.
Call out to Mass Effect writers
They say that if you want to give a life to a character, give him flaws along with strengths.
So, what flaws do your Shepards have?) Tell me. I need some real examples, because my love for Shepard may have blinded me and all I see is perfection in every bit of her XD
P. S.: And please kindly reblog, if you can – the wider the question spreads, the more opinions will there be. And along with that I will be veeery glad to meet new lovely Shepards))
Jane has many flaws.
She’s not intelligent, she can’t hack, can’t understand sciences or math, and only has shooting something as her answer to any question.
She shamelessly flirts, but it most times makes the recipient uncomfortable because she often times refers to sex over compliments of appearance, personality, etc.
When she marries, she is willing to sacrifice everything for her partner, even innocent people, because she’s selfish and doesn’t want to lose what she thinks she deserves just for people she doesn’t care about.
She’s crude, foul mouthed, and opinionated. She’s not diplomatic, choosing to threaten to get her way or taking to violence when she thinks the opposing side is being stupid and unreasonable. She gets angry easily, but curses at any drop of the hat just because she wants to.
Though she has friends on the Normandy – after being hard to open up and consider them friends – she still keeps much of her life hidden. Only her husband knows the truth of her life before the Alliance. She also wouldn’t let anyone else but him know her flaws, thinking others not worthy of seeing them. After everything, she only has the one person she’s ever truly shown trust to, keeping things hidden in some degree or another to everyone else.
I’m sure there are other things, but I can’t think of them at the moment 😛
Why do I like writing this kind of stuff so much?
“They are still turian, Garrus. They deserve to know their heritage,” pop-pop says, humming in frustration, and Damocles can hear his dad sigh with a slight growl to his vocals.
“I told you, already. They do know about their heritage. At least that which can be of any importance to them.”
“Like?”
“The Unification War, Hierarchy laws, the concepts of Spirits-”
“Do they know the war hymns? The history behind our people’s art?” pop-pop interrupts and dad makes another annoyed growl under his breath.
“Do you?” When pop-pop is silent, dad snorts. “Right, because there isn’t any real world justification for knowing those things. I let them learn what they can in their teaching lessons and I fill in what I think they should know. I’m not forcing them to memorize something that will never come in handy when their lives depend on it.”
“That’s not the point,” pop-pop hisses and Damocles rolls his eyes, flicking his mandibles in exasperation. Why pop-pop always has to question dad’s raising of them, he’ll never know. “The point is showing them the good of the turian people, values outside of fighting some battle or another. They deserve to know all these things even if they will never draw on that experience in life.”
Garrus and Shepard 6 for the kisses?
(6. lazy morning kisses before they’ve opened their eyes, still mumbling incoherently and not wanting to wake up)
The twins were screaming in the living room, kept at bay by the door to Jane and her husband’s bedroom. She didn’t care at the moment, though. The little bastards were old enough not to need their parents’ immediate attention in the morning, even if they couldn’t be left alone the entire day.
Training sessions can wait. Jane just wants to have five more minutes to sleep and tries to will herself back asleep. Frustrated that she was left only seeing the blackness beneath her eyelids instead of the nothingness of going under, she groans softly and turns enough in bed to push her face deeper into her pillow. Her mate’s grumble coming from her right proves that even he was managing to get some rest. A rare thing given his notorious insomnia.
Mumbling into her pillow, she feels the heat of her breath against her face. “Too early….”
Garrus merely hums as he weakly pulls on her, urging her to roll over. When she does with a reluctant huff, he nuzzles her. “Go back… sleep….”
She grunts and bumps her forehead to his keel, eyelids still too heavy to push open. She doesn’t speak, but sleepily reaches up to feel for his face. When she touches his face with a perhaps too uncoordinated touch – as said by his grumbling grunt and squirming – she smiles lazily, but doesn’t look at him.
“Love you…” she whispers, her words slightly slurred from her early rising.
Garrus hums and shifts under her hands, moving closer. “Love you,” he responds, butting his mouth plates to her forehead just as awkwardly as her own fumbling.
“Too early…” she tries to protest, wanting sleep over kisses and affection. Her craving for his attention wins over, though, as she moves her head against the pillow and blindly leans in for a kiss.
They bump together in the low light and she has a suspicion he’s just as hesitant to open his eyes as she is because his kiss is skewed off, hitting her nose and cheek instead of lips. He usually has great eyesight in the kind of light that fills their bedroom in the morning.
She grunts in disapproval and tries again, lips only touching the side of his mouth before she flops a hand on his face to hold him still and guide herself. The next kiss still doesn’t quite fit perfectly, but it’s good enough for her. She’d much rather give him his attention without opening her eyes.
His voice is softer, more smooth and composed as he begins to return to wakefulness. “Love you, Jane,” he rumbles and presses a kiss more firmly against her lips before nipping over her cheek and temple.
His tender affection brings a nice tingle to her body as she smiles clearer and pushes into his kisses before giving him some of her own, touching her lips to whatever she can find while still blinded by her eyelids. “Love you too.”
WIP List
I was tagged by the amazing and wonderful @bethadastra to list out my current WIPs so why not? Let me dust everything off and see!
Art
(I only have the one because I can’t work on multiple art things)
Damocles (adult) Tattoo Reference Sheet: There are soooo many and I’m dying, questioning my sanity for deciding to do this. Save me!
(Okay, so apparently I’m a doof because I realized I have more, non-ME are projects)
Wendigo (Name Subject To Change): A horror themed creature for an Original Work on the drawing board (heh, pun).
Chimera (Name Subject To Change): A character for yet another Original Work, this one a mix of Sci-Fi with some Fantasy elements.
Writing
(I have so many, but I’ll try to remember them all without somwithout having to do some serious digging)
A Solana Vakarian / James Vega From Parable One-Shot: Yes, I ship these two and proud!
Osteogenesis From Parable: A series of one-shot chapters of the time between Recrudenscence and the next (currently unnamed) installment of Parable.
Currently Unnamed Parable Installment: Still in the planning stages, but definitely ready and raring to go!
Fibonacci: An AU that mixes elements with the Fantasy genre with Mass Effect events. Many characters have been changed / switched with others. There be dragons!
A Secret Project With @mosaiccreme: No telling! My lips are sealed for now.
Unnamed Wendigo Fic: Deals with a physcological form of horror. Think Parable Jane’s nightmares from Resurgence and Revelations and that foggy world.
Unnamed Chimera Fic: Set in a dystopian setting where maigc more along the scientific spectrum exists. War led to the creation of creatures known as ‘Chimera’, but they have long since gone the way of the very environment the war created, tainted and degraded by time and damage. That is until a group of humans travelling through a delapitated city in search of knowledge find a chimera that retains its ability to think, learn, and adapt in what’s the closest to having ‘humanity’ it can get.
Now for some tags! I tag @wafflesrock16, @saphistar, @flux-eterna, @mosaiccreme and anyone else who wants to join!
