Umbrus Nocturni Snippet

Over time on Omega, Archangel had accumulated plenty of pieces of valuable information, known supporters, and resources, much of which Garrus had left mostly untouched for fear of possible betrayal. Involving too many people – too many unknowns – only opens himself to the whims of whoever may deem themselves and their own matters more important than keeping the anonymity of the only one trying to make Omega safe for those very people. His men had no qualms about putting that trust in the unknown, in faith, but he finds himself now in need of these connections, of the favors to Archangel to pay out.

It’s not like his new body lends to convenience in getting new clothes and armor. No turian can be born with the monstrous body he has, but there has to be someone – if not many – that are supplying Cydian and the other Nocturni with these essential items. It might take Garrus digging into the untouched credits he’s accumulated over his time on the station – and perhaps a few unfortunate favors – but he knows he can find someone interested enough to go against the norm of typical turian gear and not ask too many questions. Credits always have a way of piquing curiosity.

Digging into the information accumulated by himself and his team on potential allies – to an extent – Garrus finds an armorer that might be fit for the task. It’s a quarian man, older than he’d have expected for a quarian so far from the Flotilla, but word is that he’s one of the best armorers for anyone working freelance. Garrus had a good feeling he wouldn’t need to worry about dealing with the major merc groups with the quarian’s reputation of being solely sought after through word of mouth. If he remembers right, Melenis had the man make her a set of armor that she has highly recommended multiple times.

Juxtaposed Chapter 7 Revisions

Considering her own advancement through her military and his boring work patrolling the Wards had begun to make Garrus consider applying for admittance into the Investigations Division of C-Sec. He feels like he could help the most people working behind the scenes, uncovering the crimes and putting away the people that would make the Citadel nothing but a lawless space station. The best place to feel like he’s making a difference has to be Investigations where he could learn all the way to catch those that would otherwise run free, abusing the innocent people on the Citadel and taunting the law. In Investigations, he could do some good, make the Citadel safer and cleaner for people looking for a nice place to forget their responsibilities and enjoy what the galaxy has to offer.

People like Jane.

The only thing holding him back from submitting his application is the knowledge that there’s every chance that his father will become his superior at one time or another. Titus Vakarian worked hard to get where he is, carries the praise of being one of the best detectives on the station, and Garrus doesn’t see much reason for their paths not to cross for at least one duty rotation. For most, the idea of a family member being a superior can seem like an unfair advantage and foolish mistake in the chain of command, but the word ‘nepotism’ didn’t seem to be in Garrus’ father’s dictionary. When it came to something as serious as his profession, his father will be his toughest critic. Garrus was held to a higher standard throughout his life despite his achievements and he knows being related and under his father’s command will only raise that bar higher. It might not even take them working together for his father to develop strong opinions of Garrus’ methods, but Garrus can avoid it easier when he doesn’t have to face his father everyday as his superior, following orders that’ll be made to test him more than his fellow officers based on principle.

For as long as Garrus could remember, his father represented anything – and everything – that could go wrong for any plan Garrus laid out. When he excelled in his schooling as a child, his father would often insist that it was lacking the challenge Garrus needed, tending to supplement that missing difficulty with his own curriculum. Garrus could have been a Spectre if not for his father’s insistence against their methods, that he was better than defying the structure of set laws. He could’ve still joined if not for what he’s sure was his father’s meddling behind his back and he knew no matter what he did in Investigations, his father would love nothing more than to pick apart his cases at any and every chance he got.

The Advocate personality type is very rare, making up less than one percent of the population, but they nonetheless leave their mark on the world. As members of the Diplomat Role group, Advocates have an inborn sense of idealism and morality, but what sets them apart is that they are not idle dreamers, but people capable of taking concrete steps to realize their goals and make a lasting positive impact.

When it comes to romantic relationships, Advocates take the process of finding a partner seriously. Not ones for casual encounters, people with the Advocate personality type instead look for depth and meaning in their relationships. Advocates will take the time necessary to find someone they truly connect with – once they’ve found that someone, their relationships will reach a level of depth and sincerity that most people can only dream of.

Getting to that point can sometimes be a challenge for potential partners, especially if they are the impatient type, as Advocates are often perfectionistic and picky. People with this personality type aren’t easily talked into something they don’t want, and if someone doesn’t pick up on that, it’s a trespass that is unlikely to be forgiven, particularly in the early stages of dating. Even worse is if a suitor tries to resort to manipulation or lying, as Advocates will see right through it, and if there’s anything they have a poor tolerance for in a relationship, it is inauthenticity.

The Rebel:

The Rebel is comfortable throwing caution to the wind—and bucking the system—if that means getting their point across.

The Athlete:

The Athlete’s focus and drive are unparalleled. Staying healthy and being fit are paramount to them (as for winning, that doesn’t hurt, either).

The Royal:

When the Royal walks into a room, they command attention. They are the one in charge, and they enjoy reaping the rewards of their hard work.

Protagonists are natural-born leaders, full of passion and charisma. Forming around two percent of the population, they are oftentimes our politicians, our coaches and our teachers, reaching out and inspiring others to achieve and to do good in the world. With a natural confidence that begets influence, Protagonists take a great deal of pride and joy in guiding others to work together to improve themselves and their community.

People who share the Protagonist personality type feel most at home when they are in a relationship, and few types are more eager to establish a loving commitment with their chosen partners. Protagonists take dating and relationships seriously, selecting partners with an eye towards the long haul, rather than the more casual approach that might be expected from some types in the Explorer Role group. There’s really no greater joy for Protagonists than to help along the goals of someone they care about, and the interweaving of lives that a committed relationship represents is the perfect opportunity to do just that.

Protagonists don’t need much to be happy, just to know that their partner is happy, and for their partner to express that happiness through visible affection. Making others’ goals come to fruition is often the chiefest concern of Protagonists, and they will spare no effort in helping their partner to live the dream. If they aren’t careful though, Protagonists’ quest for their partners’ satisfaction can leave them neglecting their own needs, and it’s important for them to remember to express those needs on occasion, especially early on.

The Caregiver:

Friendly, sincere, and compassionate, the Caregiver finds their reward in helping others. No one could ask for a better best friend

The Creative:

The Creative appreciates all beautiful things, in art and daily life. The creative act is essential to who they are.

The Intellectual:

The Intellectual is the ultimate dinner-party guest. Engaging questions and thoughtful debate are their trademarks.

Well, I can’t as I’m too surprised with these two. What do you guys think? This sound like my babies? 😀

I don’t know why, but there’s a lot of talk of character hate on my Tumblr feed and it’s got me thinking.

My love/hate relationship with characters is a complicated one, but one that works. My fics may not read it, but I enjoy every character (yes, I even have some enjoyment from Jacob Taylor though Bioware really screwed over the character). Sure, some have better stories and character development than others. And we all know there will always be my favorites, but here’s the thing:

I can hate a character as a player getting into my Shepards’ heads, but love them as a writer or unbiased viewer. And I only really came to this conclusion after being a fanfiction writer.

Now some will argue that I wrote some characters (Ashley comes to mind) very negatively, but I think it’s safe to say that my opinions and my characters’ opinions differ. Just because Jane and Ashley don’t get along doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy just how much damn growth she has through the trilogy. In all honesty, I love her more than Kaidan even though my first playthrough of the trilogy had me letting her die on Virmire because I didn’t like her attitude. I’ll say the first playthrough I had with her alive was my absolute favorite – and she didn’t even live for the sole reason of being a romance because I was playing a femShep.

Another example was Garrus and Joker. Sure, I was a bit peeved Shepard died because of Joker’s insistence on staying behind, and then the fact that it was never brought up, but I specifically thought about Garrus’ reason to hate -and down right try to kill – the man. Who wouldn’t be angry seeing the last person who say your loved one and find out they held out while everyone was evacuating? You’d be crazy not to be pissed in some way. Yet, personally, I really do love Joker. I love his humor and attitude. I always have.

I guess, in short, I’m trying to say that people should realize there’s a difference between not caring about a character as a person in relation to the role you’re playing as Shepard and appreciating the character as a story telling tool. You can hate and love them because of this, but at least have reasons and an open mind.

And in the case of fanfiction, just because an author writes a certain character in a bad light through their Shepard’s eyes doesn’t mean they hate them. Although, writers, you shouldn’t bash a character oh the basis of you hating them as a player. Each character deserves to be portrayed in a way where the reader can make their own decisions on how to feel. It just isn’t fair to force a reader to share your opinion when you’re supposed to be telling a story instead of a Tumblr rant (she says as she writes her own essay).

In short, let’s all agree to be better people and accept that everyone has their own opinions. If you don’t like a character, block their tag or don’t read fics of them, but let those who do love them enjoy them.

P.S. I’m still mad at what Bioware did with Jacob. What a way to trash their own character.
