Jai came about from a ‘what if.’ What if Mindor Shepard didn’t just pick up, join the Alliance, and have a nice career with the military? What if she was affected by it more than she let on, did some things she regrets, and now feels empty?
Jai was traumatized from the batarian raids on Mindor. Who wouldn’t? But she saw therapists well enough that she felt the Alliance was a great future for herself. Then came Torfan. I won’t lie and say she didn’t take a morbid bit of satisfaction from killing batarians in the moment, but the realization of what exactly she was a part of hit her hard. She killed innocent people, becoming a monster no better than the batarians that killed her family, and she’s haunted with that.
The fic starts out with the final conversation she had with anyone Alliance. Terapists and doctors for the Alliance deemed her unfit to return to duty because of her PTSD, but she had nothing else. She went through a time of mental anguish and feeling like she wasn’t worth the air she breathes.
It took some time for her to gain enough control to think of her present situation, but eventually she realized the most she wanted in life was to do some good for all the bad. She was a field medic in the Alliance and thought that perhaps she’d like to follow that path, but getting a medical degree and actually treating people seemed out of her reach. No hospital in their right mind would take on a doctor that couldn’t handle her mental breakdowns and even the beginning of her schooling was difficult as her class moved faster than her mental state needed in order to calm herself in bad situations (she can have a breakdown over somethings that seem completely unrelated to her past if the stress is high enough).
Plus, if the Alliance didn’t trust her, then hospitals wouldn’t.
Strung out with no feeling of being any use, she went to Omega. She doesn’t exactly know why, but she felt like she could do more good there than at a place where her mental state could ruin everything. Being on Omega, she could always take a day off if she’s not feeling it, but not so much in an actual medical profession. It’s not long before she finds Mordin’s clinic and offers her aid, even if she’s a mere nurse or medical assistant, but Mordin saw something in her. He took her under his wing and began training her in his own way. She’s still learning and in no way knows anywhere close to what he does, but she knows enough now to be useful. It doesn’t hurt that Mordin is understanding on her bad days.

similarly a piece of writing that takes a few minutes to read could have weeks of work behind it… dont take creativity for granted when ur getting it for free
I think all writers need a friend who will encourage their desire to write absolute garbage. Not necessarily something that is badly written, but like, stupid self indulgent bullshit. “Cringey” aus or crossover fanfics. Aus or crossover fics of your own ocs.
Writing that stuff is fun and is great practice, but sometimes I feel like “wow, this is hardly productive, why am I even writing this, who else would ever want to read this?” The answer is your friend who encourages your trash writing, that’s who. Write it for yourself and for them.
