Juxtaposed, Ch5 Rewrite/Revision Snippet

As the two pay for their meals individually, Garrus notices Jane typing something into her omni-tool once the waitress heads off to scan their chits. Not until the both of them are leaving and stepping out into the usual flow of Citadel traffic does he get at least some kind of clue. That clue coming in the form of Jane pushing him in a direction, an excited bounce in her step and cheerful expression on her face.

Himself being over two meters tall and her barely reaching his chest, he can only imagine the sight they make. He’s sure he would have laughed if he ever caught sight of a turian his size letting himself be carted off to Spirits know where by such a tiny human, wondering just what could be so important. He can easily stop the two of them by simply anchoring his feet, but he’s just enjoying himself, relaxed in her company just as she seems to be in his.

Noticing familiar waypoints as they pass them, Garrus realizes that Jane must have made up her mind about going to the club, Adventa’s. It’s true that he wouldn’t have chosen the place himself, but her contagious excitement as he watches her drag him into the flashing lights and thumping music convinces him. If anything, he’s sure he’ll enjoy the company.  Maybe even relax with a few drinks and see if he can get her to do the same.

1. Although it is hard to test the hearing of sharks, they may have a sharp sense of hearing and can possibly hear prey from many miles away.A small opening on each side of their heads (not the spiracle) leads directly into the inner ear through a thin channel. ( source: wikipedia – sharks )

The shark has the greatest electrical sensitivity of any animal.

3.

There are two documented cases in which a female shark who has not been in contact with a male has conceived a pup on her own through parthenogenesis. The details of this process are not well understood, but genetic fingerprinting showed that the pups had no paternal genetic contribution, ruling out sperm storage.

Shark eyes are similar to the eyes of other vertebrates, including similar lenses, corneas andretinas, though their eyesight is well adapted to the marine environment with the help of a tissue called tapetum lucidum. This tissue is behind the retina and reflects light back to it, thereby increasing visibility in the dark waters. The effectiveness of the tissue varies, with some sharks having stronger nocturnal  adaptations.

Sharks and other cartilaginous fish have skeletons made of cartilage and connective tissue. Cartilage is flexible and durable, yet is about half the normal density of bone. This reduces the skeleton’s weight, saving energy

This is honestly one of the best things I have seen in awhile.

I can hop on this headcanon. I don’t have very in depth asari ones, so I’m referencing this if OP is alright with it (credit given, of course). @wrexticles

Snippet from Juxtaposed:Ch 4 Revisions/Rewrites

“May I get you something to drink?” she asks, opening her tool and giving Jane and Garrus an expectant glance.

“A Coke,” Jane says, menu pulled up so closely to her face and it nearly blocks her out of Garrus’ sights.

When Thelia looks to him, Garrus hums and answers before picking up his menu. “Do you have any S’rica?” The waitress nods and he returns the gesture. “Then I’ll take one.” She leaves them to look over the menu, and he stops midlift of his own as he catches Jane’s dark green eyes over the top of hers. “What?”

“What’s Shrica?”

He chuckles and shakes his head softly, slowing his pronunciation of the word. “S – rica. There’s a sharp pronunciation in the beginning.  A hiss, not a ‘shush.’” She makes her eyes roll, huffing loudly, and he recognizes that as a humorous, exasperated gesture. “You wanted to know, didn’t you?”

“I wanted to know what it was, not how to say it,” she responds, snorting and lifting a corner of her lips. “So tell me what it is now that you’ve made fun of the human’s pronunciation.”

Rumbling softly, he shrugs. “It’s a dextro beer. Quarian, if I’m remembering correctly.” He hears her snort and lifts a brow plate. “And that’s funny?”

She chuckles and smiles, setting down her menu. “Most people don’t really drink this early. It’s mid-day.”

“It’s after my shift,” he retorts, looking down to his menu to finally read it before the waitress begins to hover around, subtly trying to rush their decision. “And after a promotion, I believe I deserve one.”

He hears her huff a short laugh before she hums, the sound of disapproval that he’s heard from coworkers. From context, he doubts she truly feels what she’s saying through her vocal cues because the air around them doesn’t seem to have weighed down, and she’s still wearing that quirk to her lips that a frown usually replaces when humans are upset.

“Alright, alright. You got me there.” She shrugs and her attention drifts out to the crowds of Citadel citizens passing by the restaurant. “By all means, get hammered.” Snorting, she looks back to him with one of her red colored brows lifted. “But I’m not dragging you out of here if you’re too drunk to walk a straight line.”

Garrus chuckles, trying to imagine someone so small trying to carry the burden of a drunken turian of any size. He may be slightly taller than average, but even a smaller than average one of his species would easily topple Jane over despite whatever training the Alliance may have given her. Even if she managed to get a turian over her shoulders, the drastic height difference would limit maneuverability and hinder balance. It’s just not logistically possible, at least not without some serious difficulties.

Alright, I’m going to share some of my Juxtaposed / Chapter 1 Edits

Growing up, Garrus wanted nothing more than to help people and, more importantly, right the wrongs in the galaxy so many seem content to close their eyes to. However, since serving his mandatory years in the military and joining C-Sec as preferred – demanded – by his father, he has found himself doing nothing but standing around the Presidium or walking the same routes repeatedly for hours until his shift finally ends. Every day, he itches beneath his plates for action or change, but none comes. He also has a strong suspicion his extended posting here may be his father’s doing, since normal Presidium postings only extend for a month or two and not the near six-month stint he finds himself with, but he has neither the proof or the means to obtain any. Even the assurances from his commanding officer that it will be any day now when he is finally promoted into a position of importance fall on deaf ears so long as Titus Vakarian’s adamant refusal to allow his son into Spectre training still rings in Garrus’ ears.

you know what’s been on my mind for the past year?

what if Shepard lost Garrus’ trust and loyalty by not letting him shoot Sidonis?

like, i just have this scene in my head of Garrus going ‘I’ll be here until the end of the mission, after that we part ways,’ I’ve no idea what happens after that, but that scene’s been on a goddamn loop!

Thanks! I hate it.

#this is such a sad idea!!!#nooooo#but totally see him going back to palavan#and not being able to ignore the reapers and doing his whole advising thing#and them reuniting on that moon that i cant spell right#and him going with her because victus says so#and despite how he doesnt trust her personally#he /knows/ she’s still their best shot

kind of~~

i mean, here’s what i have so far:

  • if a turian betrays their unity that’s grounds for execution and as bad of a Turian as Garrus claims to be, that’s something he follows unquestionably
  • when shepard attempted to save Sidonis life, to him it was a whole new personal betrayal, so yeah, he doesn’t trust her personal judgement after that
  • he’s even more quiet and reserved after that
  • the suicide mission goes as usual, and Garrus ends up leading the fire team throughout the base, with no casualties
  • afterwards Garrus is the first to disembark on Omega, taking a shuttle straight to Palaven, despite his feelings he knows what’s coming and what he needs to do and he didn’t much think of Shepard blowing up that one relay, though he does believe the claims it was to stall the reapers
  • when the reapers do hit he’s forced on the Normandy by Adrien as an attaché advisor, he has his misgivings about it (add in lots of grumbles and complaints) but he follows the primarch’s order and he makes it clear, he’s there on orders not because he particularly wants to
  • he takes a much more active role in planning the war instead of relying exclusively on Shep and Adrien’s judgement
  • after Tuchanka he asks Adrien to go with him, he feels he can do the most good in Turian space, but Adrien says not (and Shep hears everything)

anyway, i’ll continue to think about this until I have the outline complete in my head.

As someone who always, no matter my Shepard’s morality, let’s Garrus shoot Sidonis (even if I didn’t in Parable, but that doesn’t count), I agree completely with this possiblity.

Garrus is a grown ass man who has every right to kill Sidonis so long as it doesn’t endanger himself or the Normandy crew. Especially from C-sec connecting the dots, but that’s not a part of the games, so there is no reason I see to betray his trust. I can’t see him ever fully trusting (or even starting a romance) with a Shepard that betrays him, so everything @theravenofwynter threw out there as plot points sings to me of a great, angsty fic.

But, alas, Bioware can’t foresee all possibilities in story telling, so we have fanfiction to close the gaps. 😉

Turian Mouth and Kissing Headcanons

A thought about turian kissing came up after a recent comment on Parable and I thought, ‘why not make a list of my headcanons?’

Let’s start with the definition of ‘kiss’ because, as humans, using the word for various aliens’ signs of affection is more natural and romantic than simply describing the act.

Kiss as a verb – (A.) To touch or press with the lips slightly pursed, and then often to part them and to emit a smacking sound, in an expression of affection, love, greeting, reverence, etc. (B.) To touch gently or lightly.

Now, for the Headcanons:

  • Turians have three different types of ‘kisses’
  • A kiss between family or other close, yet nonromantic individuals, involves the press and nuzzling of mandibles.  Much like a human’s kiss, it doesn’t always have to be mandible to mandible.
  • A kiss between lovers involves the press of foreheads we all know in the fandom.  It’s similar to our closed mouth kisses.
  • They don’t press mouths together because their mouths are not sensitive and they’d have to angle their heads to do so.  At least with their forehead press, they can see one another, adding depth of emotion to the gesture.
  • The third form of kissing is one much more familiar to us, but often reserved for private life – and mostly the bedroom.  Much like we do, turian lovers often use tongues in an open-mouthed kiss.
  • This kiss is usually used when sex is on the table, as its main purpose is to taste the other as they become more aroused.  They can also flick out their tongue to taste the air much like a reptile when wet.
  • Turians possess a long, prehensile tongue that makes up for their lack of lips and open sides of their mouth.
  • Turians mouths are dry, the fact that they cannot close completely making it a challenge to keep their mouths wet.  It’s evolutionarily detrimental for the body to waste water reserves constantly maintaining that moisture.
  • Turians salivate when aroused in order to make it easier for their partner to taste their pheromones, taste their partner’s, and become more aroused.
  • Turians also salivate in an effort to keep from overheating, the heat evaporating the saliva cooling them much like mammals here on Earth.  It is very uncommon, and their bodies are no longer trying to reserve water at all costs is the last ditch effort to stay alive.
  • Because their mouths are dry, turians don’t have a good sense of taste (unless aroused, of course).  They possess a small number of taste buds towards the back of their tongue, closer to their throat.
  • Their throat is relatively wet so that food can pass easily when they swallow.
  • Turians cannot chew food and often cut their food into small pieces, which they then eat by using their tongue to move the food closer to their throats, past their teeth and open sides.  They then lift their heads, letting the food slide down their throats, swallowing as food makes its way down their esophagus.
  • Even though they possess some flexibility with their mouth plates, they are firm enough to give ‘nips.’  These don’t hurt, but some turians in interspecies relationships with species possessing lips use them to emulate a kiss as their partner can.
  • Because they only have a few teeth, their teeth can regrow so long as the nerves and gums are not damaged.  This was an important trait for their ancestors who hadn’t yet developed tools to replace the need of their teeth for hunting, fighting, eating, etc.

Pretty sure I have more somewhere in my head, but I can’t really think of them. I also don’t claim to be the ‘right’ headcanons, but I figured I’d get it out there.  Might help readers to understand Parable without bogging it down with space science.

You know what never ceases to piss me off? Someone who thinks their headcanons are true canon and anyone who thinks differently than their ideas is wrong.

Last Osteogenesis Chapter Posted!

You can read the monster of a ending chapter here

This is not the end, but it is the mark of a small break before the actual next part.

However, I am still doing the ABCs of smut with our lovely Jane and Garrus to go with Parable, so if you have any words, message, ask me, or just comment on this or the previous post about it.
